Well, its a horrible Sunday evening here in Edinburgh - the rain has been lashing down, the wind has been getting all stirred up and its been a real grey afternoon.
But I feel as content as the cat that had the cream.
My weekend has been really rewarding. I took saturday morning off and went into town to have breakfast with grandson no 1. LSH (long suffering husband for those that don't know) has been ill all week so wasn't up for coming into town to do the kind of shopping grandson no 1 had in mind. Like any shopping actually!
Grandson no 1 and I had our brekkie at our usual haunt, Centotre, in George St (go soon but don't take my window seat) - he chose a hot chocolate with whipped cream! Oh my, did it look tasty. I presume at the rate he scoffed it that it WAS tasty. Anyway we had a lovely morning - popped into Hamilton & Inches (as you do) for a birthday present, G Star,Harvey Nix and Jenners to look at jackets and tops that this young man just does not need! He has already spent the national debt on clothes since christmas. No, he does not take after me or his grandpa!
I took him to his guitar lesson then headed off to meet up with some young ladies from Heriots school. I thought there were going to be four of them but they have recruited even more so there were six. They are aged 14 and in third year at Heriots and are all doing their Duke of Edinburgh Award and want some charity work. FANTASTIC. I have lots of ideas for them but they only need to do six hours work! I believe they will enjoy working with us for TCT so much they will continue long after they need to. I will let you know.
Today, sunday, I invited myself to an event at a local church. They had asked me for information and literature about my fundraising for Teenage Cancer Trust so I took it over but said I would love to come along to the event. (the event was to raise funds for our WGH appeal).
Goodness am I glad I went. This was pure community. It was a hunger lunch - although I meant to ask about the name as the food was so good no one went away hungry - maybe they came hungry?? Imagine all those rumbling tummies in church though!
The ladies of the church had made two soups - (lentil, and carrot and coriander if you want to know). I am rubbish at just attending an event so I begged for a job - I got to waitress - it was such fun. and much later after everyone was served, I did something I haven't done in a very long time - washed up! Well actually I dried up - a lady called Jill did the washing up at a ridiculous speed - - let me paint the picture better - there were seven or eight ladies in this church kitchen, two washing up at separate sinks, with four ladies drying up and two tidying away. The speed they wash and dry and tidy is impressive! I was drying dishes one at a time and they were drying something like six plates at a time!
Meantime in the hall, folk (mainly men but not entirely) were getting the tables away. the atmosphere was so lovely and it really was community. The hall was spick and span in no time at all.
Jill, my washer-upper, said I should do the looney dook next new years day! For those of you who don't know what the looney dook is, be grateful. It's not for the faint hearted. You swim in the River Forth near the Forth Road Bridge on new years day. I mean the River Forth is like, freezing, on a summer's day! I really don't think that is a challenge I will take up. (being careful here, not saying never but very very unlikely). Ok, if someone offers me, lets see what would it take? ok, if someone offers me £10,000 I would do it. Not a penny more, not a penny less.
ONE individual, not lots of individuals either. Just making sure it's clear..........!
Anyway, back to the church hunger lunch - it raised a fantastic £750 today. Just wonderful.
This afternoon I have worked on some planning for the week ahead so I can do some do-ing! I like planning - its very necessary to the do-ing - but I LOVE the do-ing!!!
Here's to a successful and happy week.
